Penny Kusum Clum is the owner of Saco River Yoga in Saco, ME and the soon-to-be-open Kusum Yoga Scarborough and Kusum Yoga Portland. Also opening in September 2014, the Kusum Room in Saco will offer meditation, yoga nidra, and energy work. All of these venues are part of the Kusum Instititute, the place for integrative learning. Programs and workshops at the Institute connect teachings from the fields of science, medicine, psychology, ancient texts, yoga, energy, and how to use it to improve your daily life.
Penny views yoga as a science, a set of clear techniques, which predictably help people to ease their physical discomforts and quiet their minds. The ‘magic’? As soon as the mind quiets, contentment pours in. She has studied Ashtanga with David Swenson and Shelley Washington, Richard Freeman, Beryl Bender Birch and Nicki Doane. She completed 500 hour trainings with both Dharma Mittra and her spiritual teacher, Yogi Amrit Desai (Gurudev) and is registered with the Yoga Alliance. Another piece of her heart opens every year she receives darshan from Amma. Along with Penny’s love of yoga, her professional background in engineering and biochemistry has fostered her interest in the connection between mind, body and spirit as well as holistic healing and Ayurveda. Penny plays Native American flutes and other wind instruments and uses recordings of her meditative music in her classes.
